Rómulo Betancourt was a Venezuelan politician who served as the president of Venezuela from 1945 to 1948 and again from 1959 to 1964. He was a founder of the Venezuelan Democratic Action party, which represented the social-democratic movement in Venezuela. Betancourt was known for his opposition to dictatorship and his support for social justice, education, and democracy. He played a leading role in the overthrow of Venezuelan dictator Marcos Pérez Jiménez in 1958 and was instrumental in the establishment of a democratic government in Venezuela. Betancourt was also a writer and journalist, and he contributed to several newspapers and magazines in Venezuela. He died in 1981 at the age of 74.
